Ujjain Mahakal Temple Fire: A significant fire erupted at Ujjain’s Mahakal Temple, leaving at least 14 individuals injured. The incident unfolded during the early morning ‘bhasma aarti’ ritual inside the temple’s sanctum sanctorum, coinciding with the celebration of Holi.
Collector comment on Mahakal Temple Fire
Ujjain Collector Neeraj Kumar Singh confirmed that the fire began in the ‘garba griha’ (sanctum sanctorum) of the temple. He stated that 14 priests sustained burn injuries, with some receiving treatment at the district hospital while others were admitted to facilities in Indore. To investigate the incident thoroughly, a magisterial probe has been commissioned, to be conducted by Zila Panchayat CEO Mrinal Meena and Additional Collector Anukool Jain, with a report expected within three days.
According to officials on site Ujjain Mahakal Temple Fire commented, the fire ignited when ‘gulal’ (colored powder) fell onto a puja thali containing burning ‘kapoor’ (camphor), subsequently spreading across the floor, intensifying into a blaze. The entire incident was captured by CCTV cameras installed within the temple premises in Ujjain Mahakal Temple.
Witnesses reported that the fire erupted amidst the throwing of ‘gulal’ as part of a religious ceremony, adding to the severity of the situation.
Reacting to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his concern and wished for the swift recovery of the injured devotees. He assured that the state administration is extending all possible assistance to the victims.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, briefed by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, also pledged support from the local administration to aid the injured. Similarly, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia conveyed their condolences and prayers for the victims’ well-being.

In response to the incident, CM Mohan Yadav, accompanied by Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, visited Indore District Hospital to meet the victims and ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter. Expressing relief that the situation didn’t escalate further, Yadav emphasized stringent actions against any negligence. Additionally, he announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 1 lakh each for the victims.
Despite the unfortunate event, CM Yadav remained hopeful, stating his continuous coordination with the administration and expressing prayers for the swift recovery of the injured.
